Governor HATZIMARKOS was elected President of the Islands Commission during the 36th Annual General meeting of the IC in Rhodes on 20 May 2016.
The Seas, Rivers, Islands and Coastal Areas Intergroup organised on March 10, 2016 a meeting which was dedicated dedicated to the treatment of insularity within Cohesion Policy and how the specific characteristics of islands have been taken into account in terms of the 2014 – 2020 operational programmes (in line with Article 174 TFEU).
Following the adoption of its own initiative opinion on Smart Islands, the European Economic and Social Committee has decided to launch a project on the topic. It will kick off with a conference on Smart policies for smart islands, which will be organised in conjunction with the INSULEUR network and with the support of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) Islands Commission and the European Small Islands Federation.
The conference will explore the idea that islands have unique characteristics which bring specific difficulties, but which can often be turned into opportunities if smart and sustainable development policies are implemented. Such policies give islands a competitive advantage deriving from sustainable growth and better jobs.
Interpreting will be provided from Spanish, Greek, English, French, Croatian and Italian into Greek, English, French and Croatian.

The place for islands in EU policies up to 2020 and beyond
The CPMR Islands Commission hold its 35th General Assembly in Bruxelles at the European Parliament, on 25ft June, at the invitation of Ricardo Serrao SANTOS (PT-S&D), Miltos KIRKOS (GR-S&D), Tonino PICULA (HR-S&D) and with the participation of Vasco CORDEIRO, President of the Government of the Azores and of the CPMR.
The event, co-financed by the Socialist & Democrats Political Group, focused mainly on Cohesion, Energy and immigration issues.
Among the speakers: Dominique RISTORI, Director General at DG Energy and Normunds POPENS, Deputy Director General for implementation, at DG Regional and Urban Policy for the EU Commission as well as MEPs Miltiadis KYRKOS, Alyn SMITH, Claudia MONTEIRO de AGUIAR, Neoklis SYLIKIOTIS, Younous OMARJEE, and Salvatore CICU for the EP.
During the Island Commission General Assembly, a special ceremony was devoted for the new signatories of the Pact of islands.
The Guadeloupe 2014 Conference is a high level international meeting on biodiversity and climate change in the European Outermost Regions (ORs) and Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs), and in the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) of the same geographic areas.
Co-organised by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the European Commission, the French Government, Guadeloupe’s Regional Council (Guadeloupe Region), the government of the British Virgin Islands (BVI), the Association of Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTA) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Guadeloupe conference will be held from October 22nd – October 25th 2014.
Mr Steven HEDDLE, Convener - Orkney Islands Council, was elected President of the Islands Commission on 24 September 2014 in Umeå (Sweden) in the Framework of the Annual General Assembly of the CPMR.

A delegation of the Islands Commission led by its President, Ugo Cappellacci, President of Sardinia, met with the Commissioner for Competition, Joaquin Almunia to ask for more flexibility for islands in the rules on state aid.

The Observatory on Tourism in the European Islands (OTIE) has as the main purpose to draw up statistics surveys and make documents of research in order to identify the current issues of Tourism in the European Islands.
Five years after its foundation, the Observatory is going to get together its own Technical and Scientific Committee in Brussels, the 21st March 2012.
Researchers and students from universities are going to offer their collaboration to draw the picture of island tourism.
In the occasion of the reconstitution, the TSC is going to give two days of training courseon the 22nd and 23rd March 2012 in Brussels that are addressed to students from universities and graduate students, experts of tourism, researchers from research corporations and representatives from public administration offices.

The 31st General Assembly of the CPMR Islands Commission took place in Saaremaa (Estonia) on the 19th and 20th May 2011.
Signing Ceremony of the Pact of Islands within the context of the European Sustainable Energy Week, 11-15 April 2011 that brings together over 5000 participants in Brussels each year and many more throughout Europe with multiple conferences, exhibitions and specific workshops.
A new cohesion policy regulation will be discussed in both the Parliament and the Council in the second half of this year. It is therefore highly important to boost the visibility of islands in the framework of the territorial cohesion.
The Balearic Islands and Corsica are jointly organizing a debate on the subject to be held in Brussels during the Open Days, on 10-13 October.
Six insular regions have already joined the initiative, and we would like more to take part.

Article 158 was thus finally amended as follows:
(a) in the first paragraph, the words "economic and social cohesion" shall be replaced by "economic, social and territorial cohesion";
(b) in the second paragraph, the words "or islands, including rural areas" shall be deleted;
(c) the following new paragraph shall be added: "Among the regions concerned, particular attention shall be paid to rural areas, areas affected by industrial transition, and regions which suffer from severe and permanent natural or demographic handicaps such as the northernmost regions with very low population density and island, cross-border and mountain regions."

The European Parliament adopted on 4 July 2006, the report presented by Ms Caroline LUCAS on Reducing the climate change impact of aviation.
The Parliament also adopted in its Plenary session, by a very large majority, an amendment asking that a special attention be paid to the situation of most isolated territories and especially to insular or outermost regions.
